What is "trophy engraving" actually?
"Engraving" gets used loosely to describe any process that puts text or logos onto a trophy. But beneath that label sit six very different techniques, each with its own machine, its own materials, its own cost, and its own visual signature.
If you've ever received an awards order and felt the engraving looked cheap — flat, faded, or oddly placed — it wasn't bad design. It was probably the wrong engraving method for that material.

1. Surface Laser Engraving
The dominant method in 2026. A CO₂ or fibre laser beam burns a controlled pattern into the surface of the material. On clear crystal or glass, the laser turns the material into a frosted white finish at the engraving points. On wood or metal, it produces a dark scorched or oxidised mark.

Speed: very fast — a typical name + title takes 30-60 seconds.

Lifespan: essentially permanent.
Limitation: single colour only — the laser can't add colour, it just removes or transforms material.
This is what most people picture when they say "engraving". A clean white frosted name on a crystal base, lit by the trophy from underneath — that's surface laser engraving.
2. 3D Sub-Surface Laser Engraving
A specialised laser focusses its beam at a precise depth inside a clear crystal block, creating microscopic fractures that form a 3D image suspended inside the glass. Unlike surface laser, nothing is removed from the surface — the engraving sits in the interior of the crystal.
Best for: premium clear K9 crystal awards, anniversary keepsakes, founder gifts where you want a 3D portrait or logo floating inside the glass.
Speed: slow — a complex 3D portrait takes 15-30 minutes per piece.
Cost: typically 3-5× higher than surface engraving.
Lifespan: essentially permanent.
Visual signature: the engraving appears to float inside a transparent block when backlit. Very distinctive, very premium.
This is the technique used for those "company building rendered in 3D inside a crystal cube" gifts. Stunning when done well, gimmicky if overdone.
3. Sandblast Engraving (Sandcarving)
A vinyl stencil is applied to the surface and high-pressure abrasive sand or aluminium oxide blasts away the exposed material. The result is a frosted, slightly recessed engraving with visible depth and a tactile finish you can feel with your fingers.
Best for: thick glass, crystal panels, granite, large logo work on glass plaques.
Speed: moderate — stencil prep adds time.
Cost: mid-range, higher than laser.
Lifespan: permanent.
Visual signature: noticeably deeper than laser. Has a hand-crafted, textured feel.
Sandblast engraving is the artisanal cousin of laser. It's what high-end glass studios use when they want depth and texture you can run your fingernail across. Bulk corporate awards rarely use it because it's slower, but premium founder pieces sometimes do.
4. UV Colour Printing
A digital UV printer deposits ink directly onto the surface and immediately cures it with UV light. This is the only method that can produce a full-colour logo on a trophy — the printer can reproduce any RGB or CMYK colour you'd see on a screen.
Best for: company logos with brand colours (red Singtel, blue DBS, multicolour Google), photographic plaques, multi-language signage.
Speed: fast — a few minutes per piece.

UV printing is what made full-colour brand logos affordable on small-batch corporate awards. Ten years ago, full-colour logos meant screen printing or sublimation. UV printing changed that.
5. Diamond Drag Engraving
A tiny diamond-tipped stylus is mechanically dragged across the surface, scoring a fine line. It's the oldest mechanical engraving technology — used on engraved jewellery and presentation silverware for over a century.
Best for: metal name plates, soft metals like aluminium and brass, traditional engraved nameplates.
Speed: moderate.
Cost: low.
Lifespan: permanent on hard metals.
Visual signature: thin shiny scored line. Very fine detail possible on small areas.
Diamond drag is rare on modern Singapore corporate awards. It mostly survives on traditional silver/brass plaques and museum-quality engravings where the historic look matters.
6. Foil Stamping / Hot Stamping
A heated metal die presses a thin foil — gold, silver, or colour — onto the surface, transferring the foil to the trophy. This is also called hot stamping.
Best for: wooden bases, leatherette presentation cases, paper-backed certificates, the small foil-look engraving on the front of certificate folders.
Speed: fast.
Cost: low.
Lifespan: moderate — can wear at edges with handling.
Visual signature: raised metallic foil with sharp edges.

Material-Specific Recommendations
Crystal (K9, Liu Li, optical crystal)
- Body of the crystal: UV colour print for brand logos, or surface laser for simple text. The laser produces a beautiful frosted etching on K9 crystal.
- For 3D effects inside the crystal: 3D sub-surface laser. Reserved for premium pieces only.
- For Liu Li specifically: engraving is typically done on the wooden or crystal base, NOT on the Liu Li glass body itself. Engraving into Liu Li would compromise the artistic integrity of the cast piece.
Wood Base
- Surface laser engraving — the standard. Burns a clean dark mark into walnut, oak, or stained MDF. Looks crisp and reads well across the room.
- Foil stamping as an upgrade for premium walnut bases.
Metal Plates
- Diamond drag for traditional brass / silver plate look.
- Surface laser for modern stainless steel.
- UV print if you need a full-colour logo on a metal plate.
Acrylic
- Surface laser engraving — fast and clean.
- UV colour print for full-colour logos.
- Don't bother with sandblast on acrylic — laser is cheaper and gives a near-identical result.
Single Colour vs Full Colour: Which to Choose?
This is the most common question Singapore corporate award buyers ask: "Do I get the engraving done as plain etching, or pay extra for a full-colour logo?"
The honest answer depends on three things.
1. Does your logo have multiple colours? If your logo is single-colour or single-tone (most banks, most law firms, most accountancies), surface laser etching gives a clean, premium look and you don't gain much from UV printing. If your logo is multicolour (tech companies, consumer brands, multinationals like Google/Microsoft/PayPal/Visa), UV printing makes the brand recognition immediate across the room.
2. Is this an external client gift or an internal employee award? External client gifts and partner appreciation pieces benefit more from full-colour brand recognition. Internal employee awards usually look more elegant with simple frosted laser etching, because the recipient already works for the company — they don't need the logo screaming at them.
3. What's the price difference per piece in your batch? For a 50-piece order, UV print usually adds SGD 8-15 per piece. For a 5-piece executive batch, it might add SGD 25-40 per piece. Decide if the colour upgrade is worth it at your volume.

Caring for Engraved Pieces
The engraving itself is permanent on most surfaces, but a few practical care notes for keeping a presentation piece looking its best for the long term:
Surface laser engravings are essentially permanent. The frosted glass effect cannot fade. Cleaning: a soft microfibre cloth, slightly dampened with water.
UV colour prints are more vulnerable to fading from direct sunlight over multi-year exposure. If the recipient displays the piece in an office window, expect gradual fade over 5-10 years. Keep these out of direct sun if possible.
Foil stamping can chip at the edges with rough handling. Pick the trophy up by the base, not the engraving.
Wooden bases with laser engravings can dry out over the years. A light wax (Renaissance Wax or similar) once every two years preserves the wood and keeps the engraving sharp.
For all engraving types: avoid abrasive cleaners, ammonia-based glass sprays, and direct exposure to chlorine.
